By clicking on the blue title of a document in the hit list, you access the document view.
To return on the hit list, click on back to list link (top left next to Orbit tab).
Tabs
Display
The main screen is divided into two views or windows. Tabs can be displayed on both the left and right sides. The tab opens a drop down menu in which you can change tabs by selecting or deselecting. The tab collapses the right-hand menu, and likewise the tab collapses the left-hand menu. The tabs scroll through tab titles so that you can choose a tab by clicking on the title.
By default, the left-hand tabs are:
FAMPAT: On the
left: Biblio, Claims, Description, Key Content, Concepts, Fulltext, KWIC, Legal

By default, field names in the document (title, assignee, etc.) are indicated in Detailed (spelled out); you may change this in your User Settings under Display, to Short (code).
The tabs are detachable when you click on . You can then view multiple tabs next to each other.
Biblio tab (FamPat, Fullpat and Fulltext)
This table shows, for instance:
• Publication number
• Title and abstract
• Inventor(s)
•Assignee(s), Patent Assignee History, Assignee Address, and Reassignments: The asterisk on applicant’s name identifies the name as being the last publication. The translations of the names of applicants are not taken into account.
• Representative(s), their Addresses, and priority dates and numbers
• Application dates and numbers
• Classifications (US-PCL, IPC, CPC, FI and F-Terms). You can access their definitions by clicking the code (in blue). An asterisk is used to mark the main CPC, US and IPC classes.
• Technology domain: There are 35 domains of technology in English created by Questel based on IPC classes and subclasses.
In the List of publications, for each publication step of each member; the publication office, the application date, the document type, and the links are indicated.
From the Links column, you can display:
- The member’s copy by clicking on the PDF icon which opens a new window (which will be placed in your patent copy portfolio) if you have chosen on the fly in your display settings. Otherwise, the PDF will be placed directly into your portfolio.
- Document comparison is available by clicking on the icon
- Digipat login page (File History command) by clicking on the icon
- information from the Maxval module in the event of litigation by clicking on the icon. Displaying the information requires a subscription.
- the ktMINE information about the licenses, by clicking on the icon. Displaying the information requires a subscription.
Whether these links are included in your exports can be set in User Settings/General.

Key content tab (FamPat)
The representative member's key content is displayed. The subject matter of the invention, the advantages of the invention and the drawbacks of the prior art, and the independent claims can be viewed. Key content can only be viewed for US, EP, GB, and WO publications in English. PCTs (not including those published in Korean) machine-translated into English are also used. FR and CN publications have also key content.

Concepts tab (FamPat)
A patent's key content is extracted using from the Fulltext of the patent' using linguistic technologies. They reflect the patent's semantic content. The importance of the concepts is shown by a larger font and a blue color. The cover is the same as the key content.

Fulltext tab (FamPat and Fulltext)
The titles in English (official or machine translated machine), in French and German, when they are available, are displayed with the abstract of the representative member, the inventor (s), assignee (s) and the representative (s). The list of publications is also available as well as the priority details and classification codes. The claims and description of the representative member are also displayed.

KWIC tab (FamPat, Fullpat and Fulltext)
All fields in the entire family you searched, if they contain your keywords, are displayed. The keywords are surrounded by three lines, so you can view them in context. You can display all the abstracts, titles, claims, etc. in the family if those fields contain your keywords.

For Bulgaria, Belize, Belarus, Croatia, Egypt, Georgia, Japan, Kenya, South Korea, Latvia, Malaysia, Mexico, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Uzbekistan and South Africa, the database only contains information on entry into national phase of the corresponding PCT application.
For Luxembourg, the database only covers the Supplementary Protection Certificates.
Legal information for Japanese patents is provided by NRI and is available by subscription. If you subscribe, click on the Display NRI legal status link to display the legal information.
By default the legal status details are unfolded. Click on the + opposite each record to unfold the status, or click Unfold All or Fold All to manage how the family’s legal statuses are displayed.
With the default display (folded), the following information is shown:

Expanding the legal status shows information from the columns Date (date of the event), Description (including the description, spelled out in full, of the events and actions (description of the publication step, positive indicator, negative indicator, type of event, etc.)) and Details (each action and event is detailed). The codes have been replaced by their detailed names.

Clicking on the column header allows you to:
• add the Actions column: The same information when everything is collapsed
• sort by ascending or descending
• group by this field: Group the information based on the selected column
• display by group: This option is available after grouping by this field. Whenever you uncheck the box, there are no more references to the group.
Legal status events for each publication are displayed with the following color code:
•green : positive actions POS
•red : negative actions NEG
• white : neutral actions

Citations tab (FamPat and Fullpat) (Non-detachable tab)
This includes the cited patent families and the citing patent families. The citations are the ones taken from the search report and the ones filed by the applicant. You will also find the cited literature.
The listed of cited patent families and the list of citing patent families display the following information: Publication number, earliest application date, title, applicant(s), origin of the citation (Examiner, Applicant, Third Party et Unknown) and relevance category. You can access the record of a patent by clicking the publication number. A window then opens with the bibliographic information.
Relevancy Category Codes, also known as relevance indicators, are used by the EPO in their Search Reports. Relevancy Category Codes are found in EP, WO, FR, BE, CH and NL.

By mousing over the publication number, a window pops up to show the patent application number, which is cited (cited patent families) or citing (citing patent families). This is because the displayed publication number is that of the family's representative member, and may be different from the one that is cited or citing.
The icon is used to duplicate all of the cited families or all of the citing families in a list or workfile. The Explorer assistant opens, and you can create a list or workfile and duplicate the families.
By clicking on the Citation graph, you can display on the graph the cited and citing patents.

Timeline (FamPat) (Undetachable tab)
Legal status events for each family member are displayed in a timeline graph. The family’s equivalents and their status over time are included. Placing your cursor over a symbol displays a tooltip with event and number (filing, application, etc.) Placing your cursor on a color bar displays the event, number and date. A key to colors is shown beneath the graph.
Clicking the icon provides an exported picture of the timeline.
Image (FamPat, Fullpat and fulltext)
All the images are shown. The images are available at the bottom of the tab; clicking on an images causes it to expand.
The + sign is used to zoom in. The arrow lets you rotate the image. The choice of countries to display images from uses this priority list: US, EP, WO, DE, JP, BR, IN, KR, RU, TW, CN, CA, and lastly GB.
The button shows the tab as it will be printed. In addition to printing, you can save the file.
Drawings (FamPat, Fullpat and fulltext)
The drawings mosaic of the representative family member is displayed. The PDF format can be saved and/or printed.
First page (FamPat, Fullpat and fulltext)
The first page of the representative family member is displayed. The PDF format can be saved and/or printed.
Complete (FamPat, Fullpat and fulltext)
The complete facsimile of the representative family member is displayed. The PDF format can be saved and/or printed.
Navigation and visualization tools
At bottom of hitlist, total number of pages & total number of records / documents are shown.
The arrows allow you to browse from one document to another. The document position relative to all documents is indicated between these arrows.
Clicking opens a window with keyboard shortcuts, making it easier to browse.
Clicking increases the characters size (up to two). Click again on this icon to return to original size.
The toolbar
• Email (Permalinks): You get an email whose body contains the list of publication numbers and titles. Clicking on a number brings you to the document’s details (Bibliography with Images only).
Quick search line
At the top of the page is a quick search line: Strategy.
You can directly enter a keyword or a name: the search will be performed in text fields + applicant + inventor. In FamPat / Fullpat the text fields are description, claims, title, abstract, key info, advantages of the invention over the prior art, independent claims, concepts, and Fulltext. In Fulltext the text fields are title, abstract, description and claims. If a field is specified, the search will be conducted specifically on that field.
If you enter a number, the search will be conducted in the publication, application and priority number fields, unless you specify a different field.
Clicking on the arrow at the end of the line will display your search history in a dropdown menu. By clicking on the number of results, you will display the list of results.
The arrows at the bottom of the page allow you to navigate from page to page. The double arrow to refresh the contents of the history.
Family and view member (FamPat)
Two tabs are available on your left, by default the Detail tab is enabled. Also displayed is the Menu tab.
By clicking on the Detail tab, you display all equivalents of the family, with all publication stages of each family member. Click on the number to automatically load the details of the selected family member. The tabs then show the bibliography, claims, or other information from the selected equivalent.
To return to the family information, click on FamPat family.
You can choose to export one or more specific family members. To do so, check the selection box and from the Export button define your export type. Only selected displayed family members will be exported.
If you want to export two members of two (or more) different families, go to document view and details of the first family, select the member and go back to the list.
Similarity search
A similarity search is conducted on the selected record(s) using the following fields, when present: CPC classifications, IPC classes, US Classifications, Common citations (cited and citing), extended families (priority numbers in common), and concepts. The records found are automatically ranked by relevance and share at least one of the criteria. Use the KWIC tab to view the areas of similarity in the results.
Extended family search
An extended family search finds all documents that share at least a one priority number. Divisions, Continuations and Continuations in part are included in an extended family.
Graph extended family
Displays a visual representation of the extended family with links to different priorities.
