Extended Family Graph

The graph displays the relationship of priorities in an extended family. An extended family consists of at least one FamPat family. Two FamPat families are in the same extended family, if each of FamPat families have at least one common priority.

Each rectangle displays the publication number and the first date of application of a patent. Only the first stage of publication is shown.

The rectangles on white background only indicate a priority number, no publication has been made with this number which is why it is indicated as Unpublished.

Mouseing over the colored rectangles will display its title, the applicant, the first application date and the links in the family (shown in the graph).

Double clicking on a patent appears in a pop-up window title, the abstract, the applicant, the IPC codes and links in the family. The title is a link that displays the details of the patent in another window. The link on IPC codes is a shortcut to the WIPO website and displays the code definitions. The Close button closes the window.

The lines between the family members are color-coded to reflect the type of patent filing (see Filter function).

The icon  enables a screen shot of the graph which can then be exported and saved in a picture format such as pgn or gif.

The graph is only available after a search in FamPat and Fullpat collections.

The graph display has a limit of 3000 links.

Color by function

By default, the graph coloring will indicate each of the Analysed Fampat patent families. Four colors are available to distinguish different FamPat families that constitute the extended family.

From the dropdown menu, you can choose to color with Top assignees or Legal status.

The top assignees by coloring will color the four main assignees.

Coloring by legal status will distinguish pending applications, granted patents or are expired, revoked or lapsed.

At the bottom left of the graph, the legend is displayed. You can change the color, four lines are available. By clicking on the line of the value, a pop-up window will open and you can change the value (if several are available) and/or group several values in one color (if several are available). The eraser button deletes the value of the line.

The legend is updated automatically with the choice made from the color menu.

Filter function

By default, the graph displays all the publication family links.

You can choose to display only the publications of a particular office. Since Displayed authorities, different offices of the graph are listed and you can choose one. The default choice is All.

A second filter is available on the connection types of the family. Are proposed: the claimed priorities, EP or WO connections, Continuations, Continuations In Part, Divisionals, Provisionals and Additions connections. By default, all links are checked. Links with EP correspond to the countries designated in EP. Links with WO correspond to the national phase entries.

A color code is used to symbolize the links:

- Claimed priorities: blue arrows

- EP or WO : green arrows

- Continuations, Continuations In Part, Divisionals, Provisionals and Additions: red arrows

The color of the arrows is independent of the one you set up with the Color by function.

The last filter is to repeat connections with the following option: connections from “child” parents which are already shown on the”parent”. This option increases the number of links between publications. By default, the option is not checked.

The Apply button validates the choice and the Cancel button closes the window without accepting the filter of choice. The Reset button returns the filter the filter parameters as they are by default.
