Examples of monitoring

Below are examples of monitoring (manual or automatic) which you can set up using the search tool and the monitoring codes presented in the sections above.

Example 1: Monitoring forward citations for an applicant's entire portfolio

This monitoring is manual; the codes will need to be changed each time it is run.

Question 1: Search the applicant's portfolio

Question 2: Search forward-citation families for the entire portfolio

Question 3: Combining question 2 with the UCT code and the week (or the update week interval)

e.g.:

    1        applicant X/PA/OPA/PAH/OWR/REAS

    2        CITF NOSOURCE  SS 1

    3        2 AND 2015-01:2015-04/UCT

The command CITF NOSOURCE (forward citations) lets you ignore the results of the initial question, while keeping self-citations.

Monitoring cannot be done with automatic alerts because the way IS departments (or automatic alerts) work is as follows: The limitation is done at the start of the update week.

Besides the initial question which is used as the basis for identifying forward citations is an entire patent portfolio that must be searched in the whole Fampat database, not just the last update week.

Example 2: Monitoring an applicant's forward citations

This monitoring is automatic.

Question 1: Search for the applicant in the citations field

e.g.: 1  applicant X/CT

The query is then used to create an alert. The monitoring code to be used will be UCT.

The alert will make it possible to be informed whenever there is a new citation from applicant X.

Example 3: Monitoring the forward citations of a list of patent numbers

This monitoring is automatic.

Question 1: Search for the publication numbers in the citations field

e.g.: 2  list of publication #s /CT

The query is then used to create an alert. The monitoring code to be used will be UCT.

The alert will make it possible to be informed whenever a publication # is cited. However, care must be taken to incorporate new #s, particularly if it relates to monitoring a family (integrating new members).
